Topic: Learn about what an apprenticeship is, how they differ from internships and how your company can benefit from having an apprenticeship program. Also learn about the resources available to you and your apprentices.

Bio: Melisa Stark has been with the Department of Workforce Services for over 24 years. In that time she has held numerous positions developing and managing industry/education partnerships and workforce development initiatives along with various grant programs. She was appointed as the new Commissioner of Apprenticeships for the State of Utah in August of 2019. She currently sits on the Workforce and Economic Development Advisory Board for Salt Lake Community College and has previously been a member of various college Program Advisory Boards. Over the years, Melisa has received a number of awards for work performed in these areas, most recently the Eagle Award from the National Association of State Workforce Agencies.

Topic: There are a variety of undergraduate and graduate HR students at USU. This presentation will explain the various HR programs at USU, what types of internships student may be looking for, and how the university and companies can partner together to enhance the internship experience.

Bio: Chris Hartwell is a professor in the management department at Utah State University. He received his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management from Purdue University. His research interests include employee selection, performance management, social media in the workplace, and talent management. He is faculty advisor to USU’s SHRM chapter and director of the MHR internship program.

Chris also has many years of professional HR experience, including recruiting, selection, performance management, and employee training & development. He has worked for such organizations as the U.S. Senate, SHRM, Kelly Services, and Bridgerland Technology College’s Custom Fit Department.
